About us

In July 1989 Bob Younger of Morningside Bookshop published the first issue of The Gettysburg Magazine. It was a 128 page magazine devoted solely to the Gettysburg Campaign and it had no advertising. He was told by almost everyone that it was a nice idea, but that he would only get out three or four issues before the material would dry up and the magazine would come to an end.

Twenty years later, the magazine is still going strong and showing no signs of ending. Some things have changed over the years. Editors have come and gone. Beautiful maps created for the articles by John Heiser have given way to maps of equal quality by Philip Laino. Color photography has been added to the inside of the magazine. With the passing of Bob Younger in January 2006, longtime editor Andy Turner took over ownership.

Some things, though, have remained the same. Each issue is still introduced by Edwin C. Bearss, Chief Historian Emeritus of the National Park Service and battlefield guide extraordinaire. After printing 5,000 pages of material on the campaign, the goal of the magazine remains the same: bring readers the best in historical scholarship on the battle and campaign of Gettysburg.
