The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies

The U.S. Adjutant General’s Office and later the War Department, began compiling reports and correspondence as early as 1864 for what would become War of the Rebellion: A Compliation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. The first volume of the Official Records was published in 1881. After 21 years and $3,000,000 the final volume, a general index, appeared in 1901. Considered vital to any serious research of the Civil War, Douglas Southall Freeman called them “the greatest of all the publications on the struggle.” Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr. stated that “any military study of the conflict of the 1860s must of necessity have the Official Records as its base.” Civil War Books: A Critical Bibliography, characterizes it as “the major source of Civil War research material and absolutely indispensible to the serious student.”
